Help track down an old pirate journal, win some pirate gold OR silver
doubloon
Born to Be Hanged (Little, Brown, May 10, 2022) is the true story of first-ever buccaneer expedition into the Pacific, from 1680-82. It’s told largely from the point-of-view of mathematical genius/fluent Latin speaker/ rookie pirate Basil Ringrose. We have it thanks to his diary, which is singular in pirate history. Criminals, after all don’t typically leave written records of their crimes. That in turn is why we want the one Ringrose kept on his second Pacific expedition (1683-85).
At the moment, its whereabouts are unknown, though there are some breadcrumbs in other piratic works and on the internet (for what that’s worth). Get your hands on the actual handwritten journal itself, send it to us, and we’ll send you a gold doubloon (a Spanish coin packing nearly an ounce of gold). Find a copy or even turn up a solid lead, and, while supplies last, get a piece of eight. Use the form below. Full Contest rules here.
